Award-winning Singer/Songwriter - Activist

It's been over three years now that I've made the very personal decision to quit drinking alcohol. It was a choice that I made for my life so that I could operate more fully and achieve deeper levels of connectedness in my own life. Alcohol had become a crutch for me; a way for me to suppress what was bubbling to the surface. When I made this decision, I never looked back and I never regretted the choice for a second.
As the effects of my addiction subsided, I found that I was able to achieve greater levels of awareness, clarity, and creativity. What I also discovered is that my priorities shifted significantly. I held the sincere desire to help others heal and grow through music, movement, and mental clarity. This allowed me to engage on much deeper and more meaningful levels with my creativity, my community, and my life in general.
Through this profound realization, I also discovered that playing conventional venues where the spirits flowed in excess no longer resonated with me. When you are coming from a sacred space of recovery, you become more sensitized to those spirits. This is not to say that I am in any way judging those who choose to partake of alcoholic spirits, whatsoever. What I am saying is that my own personal priorities changed.
With this new understanding of Self, I began booking house concerts. These are small, intimate events held in the comfort and privacy of home, where I could show up with my guitar and voice. My love for music and community allows for me to integrate more holistically and engage and enjoy the moment.
In addition to booking Guided meditation and yoga events, I am actively pursuing opportunities to woo and entertain your family and friends with my own brand of Gypsy Rocker spiciness. If you are interested in booking any of these events, you can contact me here. Otherwise, I do hope that I will see your lovely face and get the opportunity to embrace your presence at an upcoming house concert. You can find the details on upcoming shows here.
A year ago, I took a flying leap off that cliff of chance and left my beloved Denver community for the fast and wild times in LA. Releasing roughly 80 percent of my earthly possessions, I held so much hope for a fresh start. True to form, I worked my Gypsy magic and worked, saved, and sacrificed all that I knew to be safe and secure, trusting that unconditional love would help me take root.
Harnessing the power of our magical Universe, I landed a gig in LA on my very first day there. I began working with handicapped adults. This opportunity had me set for making rent. Little did I know how immensely blessed I would become. On my second day in LA, I visited Disney Land surrounded by love, family, and laughter. Cousin Sheila made me feel right at home and cousin Deborah invited me to study Buddhism. All these synchronicities showed up lightning fast. Through my interactions with Mary Beth, I received encouragement and support during both times of light and times of dark. I began to experience my Bodhisattva self emerge stronger than ever.
During my time kicking around in LA, I brought people to dance and began creating music with the LA music community. Invitations to jams and recording sessions began pouring in and I got to collaborate with some people whose talent gave me an out of body experience. The whole time, I had to pinch myself to ensure that I was not dreaming.
Since being back in Denver the past few months, I am blessed to have manifested the perfect home space. It is my sanctuary. It is a place where I make music and dance, sing, heal, and bathe in the love of community. This new space gives me the space that I need to write the rest of the novel that is my life. In this novel I hold space and light for not only my own temple but for yours too in a way I never felt before. I feed myself and know your hunger is mine. I am flooded with currency and know that I shall never go needy. So I am talking and thinking about expectations and unconditional love: how we can use novelty to truly give from a place that doesn't require anything back.
In retrospect, I have always had exactly what I need to get through that day. Isn't that God love? Isn't that how the sky supports the land?
So here I am today and I am performing and teaching and loving and healing myself and others. It is my intent to connect and to touch lives. Thankfully, the Universe is providing these types of opportunities through blessing me with some upcoming intimate shows. During these house concerts, we can all enjoy food, drink, music, and community. I show up with my guitar and you show up with an open heart.
If you're interested in connecting with me, please join me at an upcoming show. The next show is September 17th from 6:30-9:00 PM MST. Won't you please join us? Find out more info on that show here. For my full calendar of events, check here.
On Sunday, I was able to play a couple private events and had a great time. In fact, I have really come to love playing house concerts. This is a show where I show up with my guitar and play for your family and friends at your party or event. In fact, September is filling up fast with these types of shows. If you're interested in booking me for a house concert, you can do so by contacting me here.
And for my next trick, I am exploring opportunities to educate and facilitate through Neurosculpting®, yoga, meditation, and music. Not sure exactly where I will land with all that just yet, but there are a couple things in the works at the moment. I have a really great team working behind the scenes for me and I am so grateful to be busy and back doing what I've always loved.
Thanks to all who came out to Lumonics on Saturday and to the TWO house concerts that I had on Sunday. I most certainly appreciate all your support and the love of this community.
As promised, I want to take a moment today and show some love for the venue that is hosting the Blumonics show tomorrow. If you've never been there, Lumonics Light & Sound Gallery provides an audio/visual treat for the visitor. Not only will you be regaled by some of the best musical storytellers, (myself included ;) ), you're most definitely in for a visually tantalizing experience that makes this event a spectacle all it's own.
Here's a little bit of history about Lumonics
Founded by Mel and Dorothy Tanner, this visually stimulating experience has been an active part of the Denver Art Community since 2008. Unlike traditional galleries, the exhibits at Lumonics stand out with a multi-media aspect. The work of Mel and Dorothy has been described as "magical", "amazing", and "Impossible-to-describe". The gallery itself has been subject of several feature articles to include: Confluence Magazine, Westword Magazine, and The Denver Post.
The founders and primary exhibitors at Lumonics bring more than 50 years of artistic experience to the gallery. This space has hosted numerous exclusive events to include music acts and performing arts activities. Any event held at Lumonics is a unique experience like no other. In this environment, you can skip the tired "bar scene" and actually enjoy a pleasing experience, aesthetic, and ambiance.
So for all these reasons, plus one million others, I do hope that you will set aside time to come out to the Blumonics performance on Saturday. As previously mentioned, I will be sharing the stage alongside some of Denver's finest musicians: Danette Hollowell and Andrew Nicolai. This entire event is presented to you courtesy of Chops Records LLC.
It is with a heart filled with gratitude that I welcome you to the Lumonics experience. If you haven't already gotten your tickets, you can do that here. But hurry! This engagement is selling out fast and by pre-ordering, not only do you secure your seat at the show, but you also save $5.00 over paying at the door.
See you all tomorrow night!
Today on MzIvey.com, I want to dedicate this post to the performers who are sharing the bill with me on Saturday, August 13th, 2016. In case you missed it, I've been talking a lot about this show in the past few weeks. In two days, you can catch yours truly alongside Danette Hollowell and Andrew Nicolai at Lumonics Light & Sound Gallery located on 73rd and Washington, right here in the North 'burb of Denver.
It brings me joy to collaborate with musicians like Danette Hollowell and Andrew Nicolai, both of whom have ties with the Meadowlark Bar where they have both worked.
What struck me the most about Danette's voice was it's sheer power and sass with just a hint of vulnerability to it's tone. If there was ever a vocalist who could sing out, it is Danette. And we have the same affinity for powerhouse vocalists such as Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and Amy Winehouse.
Danette Hollowell has incarnated as the lead for groups such as Vintage 3D, Meadowlark Jazz band, and of course, Danette Hollowell Jazz Quartet. The honey that drips from her vocals will draw you in and hypnotize you. To see Danette do her thing and strut her fabulous stuff is a spectacle all of its own.
Here's a look at Danette performing with the Meadowlark Jazz Band to a classic Mr. Magic:
It will definitely be a tantalizing treat for the ears to see Danette in her element, but did I mention that you're also going to see the amazingly talented Andrew Nicolai perform as well?
Andrew Nicolai's star shines so brightly. His style is funky, folky, fresh. Think if Jack Johnson Bradley Nowell were to have a love-child: you would have Andrew Nicolai. His songs are fun and he tells imaginative stories with the use of his acoustic guitar and a voice of velvet with a slight hint of grit.
I am so excited for this show, my friends and tribe. I anticipate being able to embrace you all. I cannot wait to share in your energy and serenade you with the help of Danette and Andrew. We are all looking forward to sharing a meaningful night of music and community together.
Thank you to everyone who is making this show possible. I am grateful beyond measure or words.
Get your presale tickets here.
Thanks to the innovative thinking and enduring spirit of the collaborator aficionado, I'm blessed to be part of the Blumonics show coming up this Saturday night. Yes, this post is a shout out to my very good friend, Nofrendo, the wizard behind the curtain at Chops Records.
I've known Joseph "Nofrendo" Mezey through the music scene and through collaboration on various projects. He has been a magnet in the local music community for creative partnerships. Chops Records is known locally for the diversity of the artists they feature and this show coming August 13th is no exception.
Can I just say how blessed that I am to be part of the Chops family. Joining me at Lumonics Light & Sound Gallery on Saturday are two artists that also just joined the Chops Records lineup of powerhouse performers: Danette Hollowell and Andrew Nicolai. We're going to learn a little more about them tomorrow.
I've been practicing with Chops crew and writing new songs. I am super stoked to share some of this material at the show. Here's an insider's peak at band practice today.
This show is a pretty big deal for all of us. The power of the music community when it gathers around one of its own is so palpable. I've seen it so many times: a local musician needs support and this community wraps them up in this vortex of music and healing. I am so blessed to be back with my community. Being part of this energy is indescribable and I am so excited to share it with Danette and Andy.
Nofrendo and Chops Records are no exception: Thank you so much for your support! I'm looking forward to rocking this show and bathing in the love and music healing of all those friends who have been so supportive during the last few months and all along.
All of this is because, at the end of the day, the spirit of collaboration that will win out over the ego associated to competition.
Please check out Nofrendo's Chops Records here. Check Chops out on Soundcloud also. And Facebook. Go show my friend Nofrendo some love!
And if you haven't gotten your ticket to Saturday's show, you might want to do that. ;)
Inspiration comes in many forms. It can come in a flash, like lightning striking the ground. Some people live their lives immersed in inspiration. Personally, I have been having an influx of both as of late. Lightning is striking these open waters where I'm treading and I am absorbing the magic of it all.
As previously mentioned on social media. I have officially procured the Gypsy Light Wagon for the purpose of booking an upcoming tour to include my musical performances, yoga days with the earth family, and speaking engagements. This is something that is currently unfolding in the Melissa Ivey world but let's take just a step back to what's happening in the next week.
Ever since returning to Colorado, I've experienced so many Divine blessings. My vocal ability has recently returned and I've been back in the studio recording new music. I've been spreading the magical music love by teaching music lessons to students all over the Front Range. Also, I'm part of a really amazing show coming to Lumonics Light & Sound Gallery on August 13th.
This show is really important to me because not only will I join some of the most talented musicians in Denver, but it is a celebration. It is a celebration of possibilities. It is a jubilee of the power of community. This show is my first official musical performance since I've returned to Colorado as well as since having my voice return to me.
The fact that Lumonics has agreed to open their space for this carnival, has me humbled to perform with the likes of Danette Hollowell who is a spitfire vocalist that will scorch you with her tone but leave you soothed with the smooth honey in her finish. Also showing on August 13th, Andy Nicolai, a masterful player with a voice of velvet. This entire line-up is organized by Chops Records headed up by the amazingly talented Joseph "Nofrendo" Mezey, who has always been a dear friend and a strong advocate for the local music community.
Throughout the week, we're going to feature all these amazing collaborators right here on MzIvey.com. We'll learn and grow together. And then, this Saturday, we'll see YOU front row and center for THE show to be at this week.
Hurry! This is a limited engagement and seats are selling out fast! Reserve your spot by visiting the Lumonics website NOW. Come out and see me and hear some of the new music that I've been working on. After all, who can resist a good servin' of that spicy-chocolate-chili-honey bee lovin'?
I can't wait to see you there!
I've heard it said all too often that change is the only constant in life. All too quickly life changes for some and with it comes pain and unmet expectations. During these times of dramatic change, our underlying states of fear or trauma can surface. When a decision is made by someone who is important to us without consulting with us first, this can affect our status or our perception of self.
When our autonomy is disrupted and our sense of certainty and safety are all shaken it causes our limbic system to activate to protect ourselves. It is a natural reaction to any situation in which we feel discarded and left out in the cold.
During these periods of extreme change, we might forget the tribe mentality. We may retreat and feel all alone when the very thing that can heal us from the trauma of the pain endured is to surround ourselves with the love of the tribe.
Maybe you're asking "what exactly is a tribe?"
A tribe is a community of people who were put here for the purpose of uplifting and encouraging one another. Many often refer to this community as the "earth tribe" or the "earth family" that was sent here to co-exist with one another as family. Often times, the tribe is not related by blood but their roots run much deeper than that.
The greatest support that the tribe can offer those who are experiencing deep trauma due to sudden changes is love, compassion, and respect.
Love holds the opportunity to know itself through these times.
Love expands and creates opportunities where there was once broken promises.
Love holds the power for us to do our best and be our best despite any obstacles that get thrown our way.
The love of community and Self allows us to be useful and be great in each moment.
So despite all the changes that life throws at us that we never see coming, one thing that does remain constant is the power of love to heal, restore, and uplift us; even in the most challenging of times.
And for that, I am grateful.
Welcome to MzIvey.com, the new online hub for everything Melissa Ivey. Today is a very special day, indeed. There is magic in the air today, can you feel it?
At any rate, I am excited and on fire today because I have such a special story to share with you all! Today at 1 PM, I will join my friend and co-host, Charlotte Piper of Dragonfly Oracle Inc for a very special Guru Tuesday broadcast.
What is Guru Tuesday, you may ask? Well, Guru Tuesday is a concept that Charlotte developed for the purpose of showcasing to the world those people who stand firm in their power and lead by example. These are people from all different walks of life who have made it their mission to follow their passion and share their passion with the world. I am so incredibly honored to be part of this Guru Tuesday line-up which has featured a celebrity numerologist, motivational speaker, and healers of various modalities in the past.
Today marks my very first interview since I got my voice back after a three month bout with Aphasia-like symptoms. Wasting no time, I began writing new songs and recording in the studio with the help of Mike Paul Hughes, whom I fondly refer to as the Rocket Man.
Thanks to the love and support of community and my own training in Neurosculpting®, I am proud to say that I have been able to heal myself and I am so excited to get back out there rocking some live shows and making sweet music with some dynamic souls.
I hope that you enjoy today's interview and that I will get a chance to embrace you at an upcoming live event. If you want to stay updated on everything Melissa Ivey, subscribe to my email list!
Thank you for tuning in today and have a blessed day!
These past three months I was unexpectedly stricken with Aphasia like symptoms. For those who are unfamiliar with this affliction, Aphasia typically impairs the language center of the brain. In my case, my speech was affected and my words came out scrambled or backwards, kind of like alien speech. My brain scans came back clear, leaving the doctors scratching their heads with no real advice for me. They diagnosed my symptons as “anxiety” and sent me home with no support and no real diagnosis with which I could work to recover.
For a month in LA, I dealt with the death of my voice like the death of my former self. My singing, teaching, music classes and my own Neurosculpting private practice all came to an abrupt halt. My song writing was over, my mentoring youth gone, simple things like being funny and going to the store were all huge obstacles. Both of my jobs in LA immediately disappeared along with the friends and people I was serving and teaching. My very being felt scorched and I was really scared. Always the outgoing, outspoken, and live-out-loud vocalist, I was now trapped inside of my own head and mind. I lost all desire to communicate because it was just too frustrating and my relationship started to crumble.
So I came home to Denver after living in LA for only 7 months. My plans in LA to pursue my dreams to the next level, were all halted. I came home with limited speech abilities and felt like a complete burden to those around me. Through the love of family and community healers, I began to open wider to possibilities that I'd never considered before but, as you can imagine, even that was a struggle. Like a true vagabond, I've been bouncing from place to place all the while trying to stay centered but struggling to be well-rested and maintain balance.
Some people don’t believe in miracles. Some people will question Divinity and I do too. Needless to say, this entire experience really tested my faith in the Divine.
Yet, I know through my experience in this life and the signs I've received, that we are more than just a bunch of particles simply existing.
With that, it is my utmost joy and pleasure to announce that my voice is back and it grows stronger every day. After a sequence of healing treatments received from a community of professionals, lots of prayers, as well as my own intense dedication to healing and hard work, my speech and voice is %100...
I've been using Neurosculpting which is a form of guided meditation, to re-wire my brain and regulate my stress. Through all these changes and uncertainty, I've taken the time to meditate and write a new story about my experience with this condition. I reset my focus only on healing and doing what I could to set myself up for success. Seeking the root of this issue and transmuting it; allowed me to heal myself and comfort others.
The biggest takeaway I've received through it all is that while I lost so much and at times it felt like I was burning down; I am still here. I am still thriving and dreaming. Setting goals with a new vision, new ears and a brand new insight with my voice. I will be sharing more on my blog and my friends at DragonFly Oracle will be assisting me in building this new chapter of my MZIVEY era.
This whole experience has revealed a new purpose. I’m not just here to sing the music; I’m here to heal through vibration. I am here to assist others in raising their voices in unison so that we may all heal and transcend all boundaries.
This new chapter will be launching officially on Tuesday when I join a dear friend and associate over at DragonflyOracle.com for a very special Guru Tuesday broadcast, which will be simulcast here on MzIvey.com and DragonflyOracle.com on July 26th, 2016
Furthermore, my first public performance since moving back to Denver is scheduled at Lumonics Light & Sound Gallery on August 13th with a very special guest: Danette Hollowell, a powerhouse vocalist reminiscent of Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. You can get event info here. We'll be playing some Melissa Ivey classics as well as unveiling some new, fresh tracks. Mark your calendars and do what you have to do to be there.
With the assistance of community, MzIVEY.com is officially set to launch in 3...2...1...
